A Mystical Awakening

For April 2026, we will offer A Mystical Awakening: Arvo Pärt meet Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. In our bridge to the hidden mosaic between contemporary Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt and the great Renaissance composer, Giovanni Palestrina, despite being separated by over three centuries, both were inspired and driven by the power of chant. Pärt uses a technique called tintinnabuli, which is the rule where the melody and the accompaniment [accompanying voice(s)]…is one. As Arvo states; ‘One and one, it is one – it is not two.’ Palestrina is widely seen as the greatest composer of sixteenth century counterpoint, weaving different voices with one melodic idea throughout the parts is exceptional. We will be featuring three extraordinary masterpieces: Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, Arvo Pärt’s Berliner Mass and, his setting of the Beatitudes.
